Filter materials

There are various methods and filter materials for dewatering sludge from wastewater treatment.

The choice depends on the process, volume and required degree of dewatering. Mechanical dewatering can use a chamber filter press or belt filter press, for example. Alternatively, water can drain naturally through a belt filter or filter big bag. Some examples are shown below.

Filter bags

We supply many types of filter bags, with a choice of materials, thicknesses (20–100 g/m³) and dimensions. Bags for standard filter boxes and baskets measuring 1100 × 700 × 700 mm are readily available from stock. We also supply the corresponding baskets. Filter bags are regularly used to polish filtrate from chamber filter presses, belt filters or screw presses. We are specialists in filter materials.

Filter rolls

A wide selection of filter media is available for dewatering, including filter rolls. Our Filtralite viscose nonwoven is generally used for flocculated sludge. It allows rapid water passage, keeping consumption low, and can be used across many industries. Alongside nonwovens for depth, fine and surface filtration, we offer an extensive range of oil filtration materials. Roll quantity, length and thickness can be tailored to customer specifications.

Filter big bags

Filter big bags are suitable for small sludge volumes where there is enough space and time for settling and dewatering, for example when a batch process periodically generates sludge. These robust bags hold approximately 1 m³ and have four lifting loops. The dewatering big bag has a load capacity of 1,500 kg.

Chamber filter press

A chamber filter press provides effective dewatering of wastewater sludge. Sludge is pumped into the chambers at high pressure (12 bar/174 psi) and compressed. Clean filtrate passes through the cloths into a collection trough, from which it can be discharged to the sewer or returned to a clean water buffer tank. The high dry solids content reduces disposal costs compared with wet sludge.

Decanter centrifuge

A decanter centrifuge uses centrifugal force to separate solids from liquids. Solids are driven against the drum wall and conveyed by a screw to the solids discharge. Liquid leaves at the opposite end. This dewatering method is suitable for a continuous sludge stream.
