Belgian geothermal drilling specialist HB Geo has partnered with Chemtrade International B.V. to treat its drilling wastewater.

HB Geo uses water at various drilling sites, mainly in Belgium. After drilling, it collects the drilling rinsing water and returns it to its own site. Sand, clay particles and drilling additives must be removed before reuse. HB Geo asked us to provide a solution.

Extensive laboratory and practical trials produced a treatment plan. After initial natural sedimentation, wastewater enters a buffer tank and then an EFA continuous belt filter system with two treatment reactors and a dewatering belt filter.

In the reactor, powdered EFAPUR provides coagulation, absorption and flocculation. The flocs are dewatered on nonwoven belt filter media, and clean water enters a collection pit for reuse in new geothermal drilling operations. This substantially reduces water consumption and supports sustainable working.

The plant is installed separately in a container at HB Geo’s site, making relocation straightforward and allowing potential deployment at drilling sites.
